Drawing on the abundance of Asian-Pacific resources afforded by our locale, we at NFLRC focus our efforts on the less commonly taught languages —particularly those of Asia and the Pacific— recognizing that competence in these languages is increasingly vital to the nation’s future. We engage in research and materials development projects, conduct summer institutes for language professionals, and distribute a wide variety of publications on center projects and programs. The projects and educational programs we undertake have broader implications for the teaching of all languages.

Foreign Language Program Evaluation Project
url: http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/evaluation

site type: UH resources   online references

language: any

The Foreign Language Program Evaluation Project (FLPEP), under the direction of John M. Norris, seeks to articulate useful program evaluation practices and resources with the actual needs of college foreign language (FL) educators, with an ultimate goal of building program evaluation capacity in U.S. college language education. Initial funding for the project was secured through a U.S. Department of Education, International Research and Studies grant, entitled "Identifying and responding to evaluation needs in college foreign language programs.? In order to respond in maximally useful ways to the actual program evaluation needs of college FL educators, the project consists of three phases of work over the initial 3-year timeline (2005-2008). In Phase 1, needs analysis, we have utilized focus groups, interviews, and nationwide surveys to identify the priority demands and uses for evaluation across a variety of college FL program types. In Phase 2, resource development, we are producing strategies, models, examples, and tools to help educators respond to evaluation needs. In Phase 3, field-testing, we are pilot-testing and revising evaluation resources, and we are working intensively with several case study program sites across the U.S., in order to generate useful examples of evaluation at work in actual and diverse language program settings. Along the way, we are also actively disseminating evaluation resources and strategies, through presentations and publications, and through the hosting of events, workshops, and conferences, such as the ADFL Summer Seminar West in June 2007. Looking ahead, the UH National Foreign Language Resource Center will be contributing over its current funding cycle (until 2010) to the further impact of this project, by supporting long-term dissemination of resources to FL educators through workshops, web site hosting, publications, and other activities.

Korean Flagship Program at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa
url: http://koreanflagship.manoa.hawaii.edu/

site type: NRCs   UH resources

language: Korean

The Korean Flagship Program at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa (UHM) aims to prepare American students to be able to function in Korean as professionals in their chosen academic or occupational fields.

During the first year, students receive intensive, task-based Korean language instruction at UHM, along with individualized domain-specific tutoring. They also benefit from the substantial Korean heritage population and cultural activities in Honolulu as well as on the campus. This is followed by a second year of intensive immersion (Korean Flagship Overseas Program, KFOP) at Korea University in Seoul, Korea, with university courses, individualized professional internships, structured Korean living arrangements, and Korean peer tutors.

The successful completion of the program and the demonstration of the ability to use Korean at professional levels (ILR 3, ACTFL ?superior?) leads to the Master of Arts in Korean for Professions (Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literature).

Language Documentation Training Center (LDTC)
url: http://www.ling.hawaii.edu/%7Euhdoc/index.html

site type: UH resources

language: see description

The Language Documentation Training Center (LDTC) helps native speakers of underdocumented languages document their languages. The goals are simple: international students spend a semester attending workshops on linguistics, language documentation techniques, relevant computer software, and issues in documentation. Graduate student volunteers teach the workshops and mentor the students as they create the language documentation webpages you will see here. It is our hope that students will become enthusiastic about what they learn and continue documenting their language either with the LDTC or back home in their home communities. We also hope that they will share this knowledge with their communities demonstrating that they can play a dynamic role in the preservation, maintenance, and continuation of their languages. The commitment of one person can make all the difference. Languages include: Naxi, Palauan, Pollapese, Sam Khew Jong, Seediq, Tamil, Tetum, Alsatian, Amis, Balinese, Cham, Chao Zhou, Chuukese, Dayak Ngaju, Ema, Fataluku, Ilokano, Isan, Javanese, Kalmyk-Oirat, Keres, Kerinci, Kerinci Siulak, Konkani, Lamaholot, Lungtu, Makasae Fatumaka, Makasae Osoroa, Manadonese, Minangkabau, Nagasaki Japanese, Okinawan, Qing Hai, Selayarese, Sentani, Tetum Terik, Tetum Mix, Tibetan, Lhasa, Tibetan, Tsetang, Tokelauan, Tokodede, Truku, Waima'a.

School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS)

site type: UH resources

language: Pacific and Asian

What is SPAS?

Founded in 1986, as the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies, on July 1, 2007, Hawaiian Studies split off and became Hawaiinuiakea, the School of Hawaiian Knowledge. At that time SHAPS became the School of Pacific and Asian Studies. However, its mission remains unchanged and may be stated in four broad objectives:

  • to coordinate resources in Asian and Pacific studies throughout the University
  • to support faculty and student development, instruction, research and publication in Asian and Pacific studies
  • to promote the University's resources in Asian and Pacific studies
  • to serve the educational and cultural interests of the people of the State of Hawai'i by promoting a deeper understanding of our Asian and Pacific heritage

To carry out this mission, SPAS is composed of 2 degree-granting units and 7 area centers. One of the degree-granting units is also an area center -- Center for Pacific Islands Studies (CPIS). It also includes the legislatively mandated Committee for the Preservation and Study of Hawaiian Language, Art and Culture.

The Department is probably the oldest and largest independent department in its field in the world. It was originally called the Department of ESL; in 2000, it was renamed the Department of Second Language Studies so as to reflect its broader focus. Its faculty and programs are held to be internationally outstanding. According to a study of publication rates in applied linguistics, over a period ten years, more articles were published by Department faculty in the major refereed journals in the field than by the faculty of the next three most published institutions combined.
