The Japanese Placement (or Proficiency) Test has been designed to assess test takers' ability to process information written or spoken in Japanese at the Intermediate levels on the ACTFL Listening/Reading Guidelines. It is assumed that the test takers are college students who have completed two years (appproximately 220 hours) of formal instruction in Japanese in the US. The test takers' overall performances will be indicative of whether they could be placed at the third year level of the Japanese language curriculum at a target institution.
