Computer-Mediated Communication in Foreign Language Education: Subject Heading Index

Christopher Coski & Celeste Kinginger

back to Introduction

Audioconferencing--refers to sound-only communication at a distance.

Classroom Dynamics--denotes articles concerned with student-student and student-teacher interaction.

Computer-mediated Communication (CMC)--refers to desktop computers used as tools to transmit text-based messages between two or more individuals. This transmission may be synchronous or asynchronous.

Computer Tutoring--covers programs for desktop computers which involve drill & practice, games, simulations, etc., without actual communication between two or more people.

Culture Issues--refers to both intra-cultural and inter-cultural (cross-cultural) questions.

Discourse Analysis--used in a broad sense to include all general linguistic and socio-linguistic topics.

Education--denotes general pedagogical concerns not specifically related to second language acquisition or classroom dynamics.

Equality Issues--includes problems such as power relations and democratization of discourse not covered by Gender Issues.

Gender Issues--deals with differences in female/male access to computer technology as well as in female/male discourse.

Online Resources--indicates the use of desktop computers to access information sources not involving two-way communication.

Second Language Acquisition--pedagogical issues specifically related to the teaching of foreign languages.

Videoconferencing--denotes visual and sound transmission of messages.

Nearly all of the articles in this review fall under more than one subject heading.
