NFLRC at UHM
Drawing on institutional strengths at the University of Hawai`i in foreign
language teaching, applied linguistics, and second language acquisition,
the NFLRC undertakes projects that focus primarily on the less commonly
taught languages of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacifc. However,
many of its projects have implications for the teaching and learning of
all languages, and the overriding goal of all projects is to develop prototypes
that can be applied broadly as resources to improve education
NFLRC Projects
Each project
includes the following key elements:
- The selection of one or more less commonly-taught languages as the
demonstration language, based on national needs and institutional resources;
- The incorporation of advanced educational technology;
- Integration of research and materials development projects with teacher
training activities;
- Dissemination of research findings, instructional materials, tests,
and other products to the broadest possible audience of potential users;
- An evaluation component for each project; and
- Linkages with institutional programs (including other Title VI programs)
and national associations to ensure maximum effectiveness and leverage
for all projects.
