In reading, some grammatical endings may be more important than others. For instance, the ending -y in Мальчик читает книгу (The boy is reading a book) tells the reader that книгу is the direct object, but that is already obvious from context. On the other hand, the sentences Родители любят детей and Детей любят родители both mean Parents love their children. In these sentences, the only clues as to which word is the subject and which word is the object are the endings. In addition, verb endings may be the only clue as to when the action took place in the absence of other words to tell when something occurred. For instance, the sentences Анна придет на урок and Анна пришла на урок are distinguished only by the form of the verb: придет, will come, vs. пришла, came.
